Zion Cemetery, one of St. Louis County's only green-certified burial sites, is taking a groundbreaking step in honoring the past. On Wednesday, October 16th, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., the cemetery will utilize advanced ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology to uncover graves in the historic Tranquility Gardens section. This technology, typically used to locate unmarked graves and buried objects without disturbing the earth, offers an invaluable way to connect with the cemetery’s rich history and those who rest there.

"We are excited to use this cutting-edge technology to better understand and preserve the legacy of those laid to rest in Tranquility Gardens," said CeCe McCoo, Executive Director of Zion Cemetery. "By using ground-penetrating radar, we can identify the unmarked graves and take a significant step toward memorializing those individuals who deserve to be honored with dignity and respect."

GPR works by emitting radar pulses into the ground and measuring the reflected signals to detect buried objects, such as caskets or remains, even when grave markers are no longer visible. This non-invasive technology is becoming increasingly important in cemeteries across the country as it helps locate unmarked graves and provide historical context for future generations.

In addition to this radar project, Zion Cemetery is raising funds for a memorial to be placed in honor of the unmarked graves found in Tranquility Gardens. This initiative will serve as a lasting tribute to those who have gone without recognition for too long.

Located in the heart of St. Louis County, Zion Cemetery prides itself on being one of the few green-certified burial sites in the area. As a pioneer in sustainable and eco-friendly burial practices, Zion Cemetery is committed to preserving the environment while honoring the past in meaningful ways.

"This is a unique step in discovering the past and a powerful way to connect with the history of our community," McCoo added. "As we continue to make strides in uncovering these graves, we are ensuring that the individuals buried here are remembered and honored appropriately."
